‘Development of UTs crucial to our economic leadership goals’
On December 30, 2022 by RajendraUnion Home Minister Amit Shah underscored the pivotal role of Union Territories (UTs) in India’s ambition to become the third-largest economy, emphasizing the need to position UTs as exemplars of national development. Speaking at a conference organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of UTs as models of good governance and development, Shah urged UTs to draw inspiration from PM Modi’s principles of ‘vocal for local’ and ‘ek Bharat shreshtha Bharat’ (One India, Best India).
Shah encouraged UTs to aspire to be centers of tourism, development, and welfare while calling for unity on a shared platform to accomplish national development objectives. Recognizing the relatively compact size and straightforward administrative structure of UTs, Shah highlighted them as ideal prototypes for experimenting with pilot programs.
Emphasizing the importance of cooperatives, particularly in the fisheries sector, for both development and public participation, Shah advocated for a concerted effort to bolster the manufacturing sector within UTs. This, he suggested, would help reduce dependence on external resources and minimize revenue loss.
Shah proposed the development of tourist circuits across the country to attract more visitors and lower transportation costs. In conclusion, he stressed the significance of UTs harnessing their potential to contribute significantly to India’s economic growth and development.
